Lose The Litter Day Set For April 26

(with cut)

Is it possible to pick up more than ten tons of litter from roadsides in

Newtown on one day? That's exactly what happens each spring on Lose the Litter

Day.

This year the eighth annual Lose the Litter Day is scheduled for Sunday, April

26. Participants can do the clean-up any time during the day, but volunteers

from the Newtown Lions Club will be at a table in front of the middle school

on Queen Street between the hours of 9 am and 1 pm to hand out bags, gloves

and directions to people who need them.

This is the second year that the Lions Club has sponsored Lose the Litter Day.

The event was established in 1990 by the now defunct Newtown Environmental

Action Team (NEAT) chaired by Judy Holmes. Ms Holmes now is assisting the

Lions Club with the organization of the clean-up.

"This is a great opportunity to join together to make Newtown beautiful," said

Lions Club president Gordon Williams. "We want to clean up as many roads as we

can. We hope to exceed last year."

As an incentive and a reward, the Lions Club plans to hide four golden cans,

each containing two free tickets to the movies at Edmond Town Hall, among the

roadside litter.

To reserve a road, call Mr Williams at 426-6443. Volunteers also are welcome

to sign up for any other road on the day of the event. All bags of litter may

be taken to any of the following firehouses: Sandy Hook on Riverside Road,

Dodgingtown on Route 302, Botsford on South Main Street, and Newtown Hook &

Ladder behind Edmond Town Hall. The bags will be picked up from the firehouses

by the Public Works Department.
