The front yard of Arthur and Pat Hechler's home on Lantern Lane lay covered in
water Thursday morning.
A five-foot drainage ditch in front of the house began overflowing its banks
earlier this fall because the owners claim a nearby culvert was never properly
cleaned by the town. But according to Joe Tani, the town's director of
highways, a culvert between the Hechler's house and the road was cleaned
Thursday so the water level is expected to go down.
Public Works Director Fred Hurley said the Hechler's situation is much like
others in town where the highway department inherits a situation that it never
would have allowed or designed.
The Hechlers say they are unable to use their septic tank because the "water
level is as high as the field." Laundry is done at a laundromat and the toilet
is flushed just once a day.
A bridge in the middle of the Hechler's front yard is partially submerged in
water.
"It's a bridge over troubled water," said Mr Hechler, who's house lies at the
corner of Lantern Lane and Bayberry Drive.
