State Says Two Animals Found Locally Were Rabid
Police have issued a rabies alert to warn residents of the potential for them
or their pets contracting the viral disease. Rabies can be fatal if not
treated promptly.
Police Chief Michael DeJoseph said October 30 that police have received state
confirmation that two animals found locally were rabid.
In recent weeks, police have found a rabid raccoon and a rabid skunk in town.
The animals were found after they had become involved in skirmishes with dogs.
Rabid animals act very unusually, sometimes walking in circles and staggering
as they move. Rabid animals can be extremely aggressive, acting in bizarre
ways.
Chief DeJoseph urged residents to have their pets vaccinated against rabies
and have their animals' licenses updated. Cases of rabies occur cyclically in
the area, he said.
A Greenwich girl died recently after she was bitten by a rabid bat.
