Studying Statesmanship In DC

(with cut)

Joshua Stern, a junior at Newtown High School, joined more than 250

outstanding high school students from across the country this July in a

program designed to develop an appreciation and understanding of American

democratic government.

In recognition of his skills in oral communication and persuasion, Joshua won

the trophy for "Best Speaker" at the leadership convention.

The three-week program gave students the opportunity to have free-wheeling

question and answer sessions with national leaders including: Senator Paul

Wellstone, Presidential Press Secretary Michael McCurry, Secretary of Health

and Human Services Donna Shalala and Attorney General Janet Reno.

For more than 50 years, the Junior Statesman Summer School has offered a

rigorous academic challenge while giving students a systematic introduction to

American government and politics.

Student delegates are able to develop leadership skills while staying with a

diverse group of high school students.
