ETH Slate To Become Souvenirs
(with cuts)
BY STEVE BIGHAM
The original slate from Edmond Town Hall roof is currently being removed and
some of it will be available to the public.
The Town Hall Board of Managers expects to receive about 500 pieces of slate
which will be sold as collectors items.
"We're hoping to sell it as a part of the history of the town hall," explained
Marie Sturdevant, a member of the board of managers.
One woman has even expressed an interest in painting the slate, then donating
a portion of the proceeds back to the town hall.
The board of managers admitted their surprise at the demand for the slate.
Several residents have expressed interest in the old slate.
Much of the slate has been removed from the roof to make way for new slate.
The old slate had begun to crack and certain sections of the roof were
leaking. The replacement of the slate is taking place on the building's main
roof and on the gable ends.
While the slate work continues, the repairs to the building's flat roof are
almost complete. Workers from Commercial Roofing of Putnam tore up the old
roof and added one-inch thick foam insulation, then put down gravel on top.
This should hold up for another 20 years, according to Clark Kathan, town hall
maintenance supervisor. Workers also raised the air conditioning units off the
roof so that they no longer sit directly on the roof.
"The progress has been slow, but we were lucky not to have a terrible winter,"
explained Sandy Motyka of the board of managers. "We're putting genuine slate
up, it's expensive, and we need special craftsmen to put up the slate."
The roof work, which is being overseen by HB Fishmen of South Windsor, is
expected to be completed May 6.
