Six Men Out

In the fallout of the Cooperstown baseball trip mishap, six members of the

Newtown High baseball team have been suspended from the team for their

involvement in the consumption of alcohol.

Team co-captain Chris Hayward, Todd Badillo, Josh Catigano, Anthony Cross,

Greg Darling, and Mitch Houser were each suspended from the team for 21 days

(until May 10). During that suspension they will not be allowed to participate

in or attend any social activities sponsored by the school.

At the conclusion of that suspension - which is reportedly the standard school

policy - only Houser, who was implicated to a lesser degree, will be allowed

to rejoin the team.

" I feel sorry for these guys, but unfortunately they brought this upon

themselves, " said NHS co-coach Al Borchetta. " They're all nice kids, but

they screwed up. They're young adults. They knew the rules and chose not to

follow them. And the punishment fits the crime. "

Said coach Dan Winsett, " We just want to put this whole thing behind us now

and move on. "

While Hayward and Houser are both seniors, the other four suspended players

are juniors and will be allowed to come back out for the team next season

according to the coaches.

" I've been depressed this whole week, " said NHS captain, Matt Zavatsky. " I

just kept thinking about what kind of a season this could have been. But we

have to work with what we've got now. We have a bunch of guys here who want to

play ball and that's what we're going to do. We may not win as many games but

we'll play our hearts out. We're trying to pick up our heads and play

baseball. It was a brutal loss for us and we just have to put it behind us

now. "

To replenish the varsity roster, coaches Borchetta and Winsett have pulled

several players up from the jayvee team where they will shuttle back and forth

throughout the remainder of the season.

" This program is deep in talent, " Borchetta concluded. " We knew that our

youth was going to be a bright spot, and now its just going to get brighter,

sooner. The guys can perform. We have a lot of tremendous sophomores who are

really going to help us. "
