A leak from a natural gas pipeline caused a section of Sugar Street to close
for almost four hours and resulted in an evacuation Tuesday.
Acting Lieutenant Henry Stormer of the police department said that work crews
installing the town's sewer system near the intersection of Sugar Street and
Elm Drive ripped open a natural gas line about midday while excavating.
The Yankeegas line's position hadn't been marked for construction workers by
the gas utility, Acting Lt Stormer said.
The torn plastic pipe caused the shutdown of about a 1000-foot section of
Sugar Street between South Main Street and Juniper Road until 3:30 pm.
The occupants of six homes in the area and Town Hall South were evacuated for
about two hours until the situation stabilized.
The line which was torn open feeds a house on the corner of Elm Drive and
Sugar Street.
The area reeked of natural gas odors while a Yankeegas crew worked to remedy
the problem, and there was the danger of an explosion, the acting lieutenant
said.
When the residents of the Elm Drive home returned, they reported that they
smelled gas in the basement. Crews returned to repair another pipe break which
hadn't initially been found.
Newtown Hook and Ladder and Dodgingtown firefighters responded to the scene of
the gas leak.
