New Building Official Will Take On ADA Responsibilities
Newly hired building official Tom Paternoster has not even taken office yet,
but the town is already assigning him new roles.
Monday night, the Board of Selectmen appointed Mr Paternoster to be the town's
new Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator. The number one
responsibility of the job is to get Newtown in compliance, structurally, on
all ADA issues.
Mr Paternoster takes over the ADA coordinator role from Public Works Director
Fred Hurley, who summarized the coordinator's job description: "It's dealing
with Wendy," he joked.
Mr Hurley was referring to Wendy Beres, the chairman of the Persons With
Disabilities Committee and fierce advocate for strict adherence to ADA laws.
The two have come into contention in recent years on several issues regarding
the accessibility of town buildings.
