This week in 1991
The 13-0 Newtown High School golf team clinched the Western Connecticut
Conference title with a first-place finish at the Conference Championship
Tournament. David Brookes led the way for the Indians with a one-over-par 80
followed by David Hufner (82), John Andrews (83), Bob Snyder (83), and Brian
Gorman (89). Newotwn was the only team to have five golfers shoot below 90 at
Danbury's Ridgewood Country Club. Newtown's 328 aggregate was ten better than
second-place Brookfield.
This week in 1986
Bobby Kick belted three triples and drove in seven runs as he led the Newtown
Jaycees to a 15-5 win over Tender Real Estate in the Senior Division of
Newtown Little League. Brian Monahan and Brock Weatherup combined on the
pitchers mound to allow only five hits. In other action, Dave Hough was
5-for-5 with a home run and Jerry Reidy was 4-for-4 as Pizza Palace beat up on
Raveis, 28-7.
This week in 1981
The Newtown High girls' track team whipped Norwalk Central Catholic 97-27 to
sew up a Western Connecticut co-championship with New Milford. Both teams
finished the season at 8-1. Kris Salnitis was a triple winner for Newtown
taking the 200 meters (28.6), 300 hurdles (50.4), and the long jump (15-2).
Jill Caroselli won the 1500 meters (5:22), and the 3000 meters (11:50).
Newtown also got first-place efforts from Amy Willie in the 400 (66.0), Lisa
Barney in the 800 (2:49), Kate Geerer in the 100 hurdles (19.8), and Lisa
Tropeano in the discus (92-3). The Lady Indians were coached by Linda Dirga.
This week in 1976
The Newtown Rec Basketball Flyers finished their season with a 14-2 record
which included both Senior League regular season and playoff titles. The team
was made up of Hank Carruth, Gary McAuliffe, Ken Richardson, Bart Smith, and
Andy Shpunt on the " A " Team, and Tom Egan, Mike Cordo, Matt Snow, Eric
Domas, Bill Flood, and Shap Smith on the " B " Team.
This week in 1971
Terry Johanesen pitched a no-hitter on opening day and Gene Lasco was 4-for-4
with two home runs as the Mets beat the Giants 18-0 in Newtown Little League
action. Toby Spector was not to be outdone as he pitched a complete game
one-hitter to lead the Dodgers to a 30-1 rout of the Yankees. Rich Chasse and
Steve Smith each had three hits to lead the Dodgers in that one.
This week in 1966
After decades of competition, the Newtown High School boys' track and field
team finally won its first dual meet as defending WCC high jump champion Joel
Nezvesky led the Indians to a close win over Abbott Tech. Nezvesky, the team
MVP for two years running, had set a school record of 5-9 in the high jump.
This week in 1961
Mike Pyle, captain of the Yale University football team, was the guest speaker
as Newtown High School held its First Annual Sports Dinner in the high school
cafeteria. Award winners included Rich Farrell (VFW Oustanding Senior Award
and basketball MVP), Ron Beardsley (All-Area Basketball Star), and Roger
Fazzino (Soccer MVP). The baseball MVP award presentation was postponed for
two weeks until the conclusion of the season.
This week in 1956
Chuck Botsford gave an outstanding pitching performance, but nine Newtown
errors cost the team a 5-4 loss at the hands of Ansonia in Pomperaug Baseball
League action. Botsford also led the team at the plate with two hits including
a triple. Other members of the Newtown Baseball Club included catcher Tom
Kearns, third basemen Al Peterson and Elzie Hunnicut, pitchers Charlie Check
and Botsford, outfielders Jack Watkins, Ken Casey, Charlie Molot, Al Shreders,
and Tom Quigg, second baseman Ken Berglund, shortstop Marvin Shreders, and
first basemen Jack Rosenthal and Randall Watkins. Mike Kearns was the team's
playing manager.
This week in 1951
Two Newtown High athletes combined to score five-and-a-half points at the
Housatonic Valley Schoolman's League Track and Field Championships. Dick
Carlson took second place in the running broad jump (18-7 1 / 2 ) while Bo
Brennan placed fourth in the pole vault (8-foot-4). Darwin Johns also competed
for Newtown, but did not place, Regional High School of Falls Village won the
league title with 54 1 / 2 points followed by New Milford, Litchfield,
Thomaston, Watertown, Bethel, and Newtown. The meet was held at the Hotchkiss
School track.
