NYBA Tryouts

Tryouts for the Newtown Youth Basketball Association (NYBA) travel teams begin on Monday, September 27. This year, NYBA’s travel program will support A teams, and in some divisions, a B team may be created. Please consult the NYBA website, www.newtownyouthbasketball.org to confirm the date, time, and place for your child’s particular division tryouts. Click on Program Information and Schedules and then Dates and Times. Tryouts will include two separate evening sessions spanning two weeks. All candidates interested in playing travel must attend both tryout sessions and be registered online at the NYBA website ahead of the first scheduled tryout.

Parents of players interested in playing travel basketball this season are required to attend an important informational meeting on September 22 at the Middle School cafeteria from 8-9:30 pm. Parents must attend this meeting even if they have participated in the travel program in previous seasons. 

NYBA is also seeking qualified volunteers to serve as travel coaches. Coaches are needed this season for both boys and girls teams, and for the A and B level teams. If you have an interest in coaching please contact Kathleen Mulligan at Scoreboards@sbcglobal.net.

The decision on whether to field a B travel team in addition to an A team will depend on several factors, such as sufficient numbers of qualified players, availability of qualified coaches, and enough remaining players to sustain a strong in-house program in that particular division. It is anticipated that the B teams will be somewhat less competitive with a slightly lighter overall game schedule than the A teams. The final decision on the formation of a B travel team will be made by the NYBA Board on a division-by-division basis following tryouts.
