Poll Highlights Students' Attitudes On The Environment
Newtown Middle School students participated in a recent Jane Goodall Institute
student opinion poll on the environment.
The poll showed that parents and teachers have the most influence on the
respondents regarding environmental issues, and the most popular school
subjects are earth science and biology.
Math came in a close second, getting 41 percent of the votes, and foreign
language came in third.
Concerning environmental issues, 87 percent of the students polled showed a
deep concern for how animals are treated. They said animals have the same
right to exist as humans, and animals can exhibit human-like emotions.
Almost as many students, 85 percent, said it is important to maintain the rain
forests and all countries should have strong environmental laws.
Students also seem to be recycling. Most said they recycle their cans, bottles
and newspapers at home.
The poll was given to 396 students from the greater Danbury area who were
chosen randomly. Roots & Shoots, the institute's youth environmental education
program, conducted the poll to learn what children feel about the environment,
their communities and the world as well as determine who influences them the
most.
For this poll, 31 Newtown students participated.
For more information about the survey, call the institute at (203) 431-2099.
The surveys cost $20 per copy.
