This Week In 1990

Gene Chappell slugged a three-run homer to lead Question Mark Cafe to a 15-10

win over Pizza Palace in the Newtown Slo-Pitch 'A' Division playoffs. Chris

Matern had a two-run blast while Rick Matern, Dave Kingsley and Andy Shpunt

stroked three hits apiece.

This Week In 1985

Patti Murren reached the singles finals of the CityTrust Junior New England

Tennis Championships at Yale University in New Haven and was seeded No. 1. She

won four matches before losing to Shane Sibley of Newton, Mass., 6-2 and 6-3.

This Week In 1980

Bob Melvin and Dr Mike Skandera defeated Bill Stowe and Sven Tilly in a 9-hole

playoff to capture the championship flight of the annual Newtown Country Club

Member-Guest Tournament. Joe LaCava and Charlie Jacore won the second flight.

Other flight winners were: Gary Michael and Billy Hedshon, third; Greg

Atkinson and Karl Svensson, fourth; George Bassett and Ernie Ehle, fifth;

Randy Watkins and Dick Peck, sixth; Steve Ballog and Don Oates, eighth.

This Week In 1975

John and Steve Hiteshew, two local swimmers, were busy winning races and

setting records. John, a member of the Newtown High Schools wim team, swam,

with two other athletes, 15 miles from Sherman Town Park to Danbury Town Park

and set a new record of nine hours and 21 minutes. Rowland Reifberg and Brian

Weitz also swam. Meanwhile, Steve competed in the Danbury YMCA Invitational

Meet, coming in second in the backstroke and fourth in the free. John finished

first in the 100 and 200 back and 160 free relay, adding a second in the 100

breast.

This Week In 1970

Mike Kearns made a hole-in-one at Newtown Country Club, the second hole-in-one

in a week. Kearns, who used a 6-iron on the par-3, 160-yard first hole, was

playing with club president Joe LaCava, Jim Boynton, and George Renda  . . .

meanwhile, Phyllis Rowe, the foster daughter of Mr and Mrs Frederic Aubin of

Sandy Hook, came home from Chicago and the Junior Olympics for the Retarded

with a third-place medal in the 25-yard swim. She qualified for the

competition at a state meet held in Storrs.

This Week In 1965

Cliff Beardsley scattered four hits and fanned 13 batters, but the Sandy Hook

Athletic Club lost its final game of the season, 3-0, to Bethel. Dave Carmody

and Ken Smith had two hits apiece as Ron Beardsley and Dan Lawler rapped out

one hit each.

This Week In 1960

Helen Cullen came from behind to win her seventh Newtown Country Club c

championship, defeating Eleanor Hubbell on the 18th and final hole. Hubbell

scored a blistering 37 on the front and had a one-hole lead at the turn, but

Cullen took her own one-hole lead heading into the 17th. Cullen then drove out

of bounds and lost the 17th, leaving the match tied as the pair headed for the

final tee.

This Week In 1955

The Newtown Bowling League was set to begin the 1955-56 season at the Edmund

Town Hall. Sessions ran from 7 to 9 pm and from 9 to 11 pm to accomodate the

16 teams. Teams and captains from that season were: Quails - Ed Casey; Owls -

Emmie Farrell; Orioles - D. Ferris; Swallows - W. Casey; Buzzards - Fred

Terrill; Crows - W. Krayfus; Starlings - W. Shepard; Robins - J. Sealander;

Bluebirds - C. Hagan; Eagles - L. Glover; Ducks - C. Magnuson; Woodpeckers -

F. Kuhne; Cardinals - J. Meze; Swans - A. Bodat; Hawks - S. Bona; Ravens - E.

Lovell. The president that season was Ernest Ehle, while the vice-president

was Hub Beers and the secretary-treasurer was Red Braun.

This Week In 1950

Plans were being made for Newtown High School football practices and the first

game with Bethel at the end of the month. Coach Harold DeGroat said the first

game would be played under the lights at Taylor Field and won't be part of the

Housatonic Valley Schoolmen's League.
