Control Spending

To the Editor:

Councilman Jacobs’ question to Mr Amaral at the April 25 council meeting needs to be addressed. Mr Jacobs asked Mr Amaral to “justify why he was recommending such a significant cut.” The answer is: the taxpayers are unable to bear the hardship of the town government reducing their standard of living by taking a larger share of their disposable income.

If the town wants to increase spending, they should increase the tax base. They should hold the tax increase to the rate of inflation. Increases of taxes above the rate of inflation means the town government is taking a larger share of a property owner’s disposable income. Council members should be encouraged to control spending. The $9.3 million or so in debt service shows a tendency for Newtown government to spend more than they collect. We must continue to reject the budget until debt and spending are lowered.
