Outsourcing National Security
To the Editor:
I work aboard large container ships that come in and out of the ports that are in the news these days. It is my feeling that it does not matter that Customs and Immigrations and the Coast Guard also watch over the port. I do not want any foreign company or entity running the ports, airlines, freeways, or any other part of our infrastructure. We know that terrorists are patient. They plant moles and build cells in areas that can be exploited. Why would we want any foreigners âwatching the henhouseâ? We are stirring up hatred for America in the Mideast. Even if these people in charge of the Dubai-owned DP World company are honorable, what are our safeguards that some group wonât get their people in key positions that could compromise our port safety?
Iâm also opposed to the sale of Merchant Marine companies to foreign entities and reflagging vessels to avoid paying US taxes and meeting our safety standards. I am told that the countries have agreements with the US government that the ships will be released to meet the needs of our nation in times of war. Yeah, right!Â
There has been a dangerous trend in our great country to keep saying we do not need this, that, and the other, industries. It is getting harder to find âMade In Americaâ products. We were told that we were becoming a service industry but now that is farmed out as well. Going with the lowest bidder is not always a good idea.
