Interpretation, Innovation By D'ART

(with dropquote, no photo)

DANBURY - Two years ago the multi-talented Francis Daley directed a stunning

production of Jesus Christ Superstar at TheatreWorks in New Milford. This

year, Daley, who is now the artistic director of the Danbury Theatre Company

(formerly D'ART, or the Danbury Actors Repertory Theatre), is mounting a very

different interpretation of the Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber rock opera.

The two obvious innovations are that the play is being staged in St. James

Church itself, rather than the theatre upstairs where D'ART productions are

normally seen, and by way of visual background, there is a modern

interpretation of the crucifixion, projected on three screens behind the

altar, creating a vivid and constantly living triptych.

The result is very impressive.

It also tends to accentuate the formality of the work, giving it the more

abstract, ceremonious pageantry of opera, as opposed to the "in your face"

provocativeness of a rock musical.

As with everything D'ART does, Superstar is executed with consummate care and

attention to detail. I really liked Arthur Frederic's choreography, and the

spirit and precision with which the ensemble performs its numbers, especially

the wonderful Hosanna.

Vocal director Cynthia McCorkindale elicits excellent performances from all

her principals, including Fred R. Rueck as Jesus, Barry Neal as Judas, Amber

Anita Peebles as Mary, Steve Faiella as Pilate, and Dana Mooney as Herod.

The slides are a terrific contribution, thoughtfully chosen and smoothly

presented, and clearly represent a great deal of work in assembling the

montages.

My only reservation about the production is that the recorded soundtrack tends

to be so loud as to almost, but not quite, clash with the voices of the

soloists, whereas the ensemble numbers are strong enough to stand on their

own. And since this is in the church proper, it is important to get their

early enough to get good seats.

The Danbury Theatre Company's production of Jesus Christ Superstar will

continue at St. James Church, 25 West Street in Danbury, until April 6.

Curtain is Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, Sunday at 7, and there will be a

matinee April 6 at 2 pm. Call 790-1161 for tickets, reservations.
