ON THE ROAD FOR NOVEMBER 28, 1997
Newtown band MIND TYDES, fresh from its latest show at Tuxedo Junction, will
be doing an acoustic show at The Old Newtown Tavern this weekend. The show is
Saturday, November 29, and it should get going around 10 pm.
Another Newtown band is going to be in town the same night, making a little
more noise not only because they will be plugged in but because this is a
nine-piece dance band. MOPPIN' SAUCE plays all that retro 70s stuff that is
back with a vengeance now, and they play up a storm. When the band members
take the stage it's quite a show in itself - these folks go full-time glam.
Big wigs, shiny clothing and makeup (on the girls, anyway), Moppin' Sauce has
fun before they even start playing! And when they play, it's everything from
well-known funk to some obscure disco... anything that gets a room dancing.
The Fireside show will get going around 10 pm Saturday night.
If neither of the Newtown shows interest you, tickets are still available for
the 311 concert at the O'Neill Center in Danbury (WestConn's westside campus,
off Mill Plain Road), also on Saturday. If you want to pick up tickets ahead
of time, they're available at the TicketMaster counter in Filene's for $20.
Sugar Ray is the opener.
The Connecticut Independent Police Union is sponsoring a concert by THE
MARSHALL TUCKER BAND at Crossroads Cantina in Waterbury on December 8. The
show is a benefit for the police union, a non-profit organization with members
across the state. Tickets are $20, and admission is by advance sale only. Call
925-8497, which will put you in touch with the Shelton Police Union; ask for
Sgt Tom Adams, Officer Mike Madden or Officer Ed Dobbins.
The band is visiting Connecticut as part of its 1997 world tour. The cantina
is at 210 Meadow Street (telephone 573-9458 for directions, but do not call
the club for tickets; sales are only through the police union).
Toad's Place in New Haven has a few Christmas-oriented shows coming up in
December. On the 11th, the musical holiday season gets going with the FABULOUS
THUNDERBIRDS CHRISTMAS SHOW, with Eight To The Bar and Cobolt Rhythm Kings
opening. The `Birds are on the road to support their just-released album, High
Water . On the 18th is the MARION MEADOWS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS SHOW, followed by
the JOHN VALBY CHRISTMAS SHOW the next night (Dec 19, if you've lost track
already). And on December 22, there is the CT Children's Hospital Benefit.
Performing that night will be Rose Coppola, The Mad Hatters, Smoke the Prophet
and Token. That show is open to all ages; the others are the usual
21-and-over.
The CATHERINE WHEEL show December 9 has been opened to all ages. So has the
SEBASTIAN BACH show on the 14th. Atmosfear will be opening Bach's show.
K'S CHOICE has dropped out of the Radio 104 Jingle Bell Jam concert Monday
night at the Oakdale. That doesn't mean tickets any less expensive for
Monday's show, however; they're still available for $20 each. Performing will
be EVERCLEAR, VERUCA SALT, THE LONGPIGS... and someone else.
KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD, the young guitarist who made a lot of new fans this past
summer when he toured as part of The G3 Tour with STEVE VAI and JOE SATRIANI,
has a show at Toad's Place next week (tickets are still available for the
December 4 concert). Slightly ironic is that the show is a 21-and-over event.
Which means, I believe, young Mr Shepherd wouldn't be allowed into the club
that night if he weren't the performer.
Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.
