Mildred Bendall At Whitford
(with cut)
LONDON, ENGLAND -- Whitford Fine Art, 6 Duke Street, St Jame's, will exhibit
works by Mildred Bendall (1891-1977) from May 12 to June 5.
Bendall's work is a celebration of color. Born in 1891 in Bordeaux, she
studied in the atelier of Felix Carme before entering the Academie de la
Grande-Chaumiere in Montparnasse, frequented at the time by Braque,
Giacometti, Picasso, Rouault, Leger, Utrillo, Marquet and Matisse. Here she
met and befriended Matisse, who greatly influenced her work.
The year in Paris revolutionized Bendall's thinking. She began to consider
colors for the first time as building blocks for creating forms and space, as
well as suggesting mood. Influenced by the Fauves, she developed an expressive
use of color to which she remained loyal for the rest of her life.
Bendall's subject matter is mostly made up of familiar things; household
objects, corners of the garden, flowers arranged in vases and jugs and exotic
fish studies. Compositionally, she is even more inventive in the boat and
harbour scenes.
The exhibition at Whitford Fine Art is made up of a selection of sketches,
watercolours and drawings, not previously seen, from the artist's estate.
Prices range from Å450 to Å5,000.
