AMERICAN INDIAN, WESTERN ART AT COWAN’S MARCH 31 w 3 cuts

CINCINNATI, OHIO — Cowan’s will hold an auction Saturday, March 31 at the Starlite Ballroom that will offer nearly 600 lots of American Indian and Western art commemorating the end of the Western frontier.

A highlight will be two works by Henry Farny, including a 31 by 39 gouache on paper, “Cornered: An incident of the Apache Wars,” with an estimate of $500/700,000, and a watercolor of a mounted Sioux warrior, estimated at $40/50,000.

This auction has a fine collection of Inuit and Northwest Coast material deaccessioned from the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio, including a circa 1780–1840 Tlingit seal oil dish ($8/10,000), a Chilkat blanket, and a Tlingit raven rattle and carved wooden spoons.

Additional highlights from the collection include argillite charger carved by Charles Edenshaw, Nunivak Island cribbage boards and a child’s seal gut parka.

Other American Indian art includes a Sioux beaded hide war shirt estimated at $25/35,000; a Sikyatki revival jar, attributed to Nampeyo; a circa 1870 Second Phase chief blanket ($40/60,000); an early Great Lakes steatite pipe collected by Peter Neff; jewelry by Charles Loloma; and a collection of Apache and Pima baskets collected by Charles L. Cummings, founder of the infamous Birdcage Theatre in Tombstone, Ariz.

Photography by D.F. Barry, Carl Moon, Lenny and Sawyers and Edward Curtis will also be included. Fine art highlights include works by artists Olaf Carl Wieghost, Gene Kloss, Oscar Edmund Berninghaus, R.C. Gorman, Andy Warhol and bronzes by Carl Kauba and David McGary.
