Award-Winning Fantasy Artist

At Next SCAN Meeting

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Tom Kidd painting a figure in oil at its next meeting, on Wednesday, April 25, at 1:30 pm. The demonstration will be at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole). The public is invited, free of charge.

Tom Kidd describes himself as a “scatterbrained” child, but he had a quick talent for drawing and was able to capture nearly anything he saw accurately with paper and pencil. When he realized that cameras were able create realistic images quicker and more accurately than he could, he turned to drawing the creations of his mind.

Mr Kidd received a scholarship to Syracuse University, but dropped out after two years in the program. He moved to New York City to become a professional artist and, after a difficult start, began to see some success as an illustrator.

Since then Tom Kidd has illustrated two books — The Three Musketeers and The War of the Worlds — and is currently at work on a book called Gnemo: Airships, Adventure, Exploration. There are two books of his art: The Tom Kidd Sketchbook (1990, Tundra) and Kiddography: The Art & Life of Tom Kidd (2006, Paper  Tiger).

He has painted the cover artwork for numerous novels published by Tor Books, Random House, Warner Books, Doubleday, St Martins Press as well as Marvel Comics.

His art has won him a World Fantasy Award (Best Artist 2004) and seven Chesley Awards. His work has been displayed in a wide array of venues, including the Delaware Art Museum, The Society of Illustrators, and the Science Fiction Museum & Hall of Fame.
