with cuts; What They're Wearing In The High School
From dread locks and bell bottoms to neckties and pants four sizes to big,
students at Newtown High School run the gamut when it comes to their attire.
Gone are the days when baseball caps were prohibited and girls were prohibited
from wearing skirts above their knees.
These day, students wear outfits to make a statement and a strong statement
they make. A walk through the NHS cafeteria can be a hair-raising experience.
The variety of dress tells the whole story about the contrasting personalities
and interests of Newtown's teenagers.
"It's really amazing when you think about it," said one student this week.
"It's hard to believe what people are wearing these days."
Assistant Principal Marilyn Capizzano said the high school days are a great
time to set yourself apart from the crowd.
"It's a wonderful way to self-express yourself when you're a teenager," she
commented.
Mrs Capizzano explained that hats are allowed to be worn in schools, but that
some teachers require that they be removed while in class. There are no real
dress codes at NHS, according to the administrator, only that students dress
in good taste and not offend others.
"If we find a person's dress to be inappropriate or offensive, we ask them to
remove the garment and put another garment on," she explained. "We like them
to wear their pants at their waist."
Here's a look at what NHS wore to school February 6, 1996.
