Girl Scouts Pow Wow with cuts

Girl Scouts and Brownies from Newtown renewed their acquaintance with Native
Americans they had met in the spring at a pow wow held in Edmond Town Hall Gym
on Saturday, November 11. The follow-up to the Native American Awareness
Program held at Cullens Youth Association property was a celebration of
another culture and discourage existing stereotypes.
At the modern day pow wow, the scouts wore handmade regalia of the Native
Americans and practiced dances they had learned in May such as girls'
intertribals, women's honoring dance, round dances, two-step, crow hop. They
also danced during the grand entry, and the Dancing Out of the Colors And The
Drum. Crafts made by the scouts were displayed earlier in the day. And
participants enjoyed traditional fry bread with their meal.
Native American representation at the event included Lakota, Nisqually,
Potawatomi, Algonquin. Live music was performed by lead singer Les Four Horns,
Lou Four Horns, Scott Holmes, Jack Dougherty (a purple heart veteran) and Mike
Dougherty, Dominic Barnes, and Bob Kent. Chris Fagan was master of ceremony,
Chip and Fran Hendrickson were head man dancer, and head woman dancer,
respectively.
At each pow wow, Native Americans perform the Flag Song, and Veteran's Dance.
A special feature of the November 11 pow wow was participation in the Grand
Entry and intertribal dancing by the New Haven National Guard Honor Guard. The
Qunniapac Boy Scout Dance Team also performed.
