File Of Life: Giving An Edge To The Elderly
(with cut)
Local senior citizens may rest a little bit easier at night, now that the
senior center is distributing "File of Life" informational packets intended to
alert emergency service workers to particular health problems they may
encounter when responding to calls for help from the elderly.
One of the program's strong points is its high visibility.
The File of Life is a double-sided, tri-fold form on which senior citizens
print their medical information for easy access by emergency service workers.
The information is inserted into a red plastic pouch with a transparent face.
The pouch is magnetized, so it easily adheres to surfaces such as refrigerator
doors.
The pouch is designed to be affixed to the left-hand corner of refrigerator
doors to make the medical data easily accessible.
The program's name, "File of Life," is printed in large white letters on a red
background, making the pouch highly visible.
The small white folder that is inserted into the pouch contains information
such as: name, age, whether the person is an organ donor, physician,
allergies, surgeries, medical problems, medications, insurance policies, and
whom to contact in case of an emergency, among other data.
The File of Life program replaces a former program in which emergency medical
information was stored in glass vials within refrigerators.
The senior center has acquired 1,500 medical information packets for use by
the elderly and the handicapped. The packets are available at the Newtown
Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road, Sandy Hook, 06482; telephone 270-4310.
