Two major events during the Labor Day holiday weekend will result in temporary road closures, detours, and parking bans in central Newtown.

The 13th Annual Newtown Road Race and Kids Fun Run is slated for Saturday, September 1. The 57th Annual Labor Day Parade is scheduled for Monday, September 3.

The 5K road race will start at Dickinson Park at 50 Elm Drive at 8 am.

Police Sergeant Jeff Silver said that runners will proceed northward on Elm Drive to Sugar Street, where they will turn left and then run westward until turning left at Sugar Street’s western intersection with Baldwin Road.

Runners will continue on the Baldwin Road loop and then exit that street by turning right at Baldwin Road’s eastern intersection with Sugar Street. Participants will run eastward on Sugar Street and then turn right onto Juniper Road, which they will follow until reaching Birch Rise Drive, where they will run eastward until reaching Elm Drive.

The runners will then run southward on Elm Drive and take a right turn onto Deep Brook Road, which they will follow back to Dickinson Park.

Sgt Silver said that during the race, parking will be prohibited on the road sections that comprise the road race course. The section of Elm Drive lying between Dickinson Park and Sugar Street will be closed to traffic during the race. Also, the roads that connect to that section of Elm Drive will be closed.

Eastbound traffic traveling on Sugar Street will be detoured onto West Street to reach Main Street.

Police will restrict motorists’ access to roadways connecting to the race route as needed, Sgt Silver said.

The Kids Fun Run will take place within Dickinson Park starting at 9:15 am.

Labor Day Parade

The 57th Annual Labor Day Parade is scheduled to start at 10 am on Monday, September 3, on Main Street, at its intersection with Currituck Road.

Marchers will proceed southward on Main Street, turn left onto Glover Avenue, and then turn left onto Queen Street.

Police said that holding the parade will require the closure of roads that lead to the town center. The road closures will be in effect from about 9:40 am to about 1 pm.

Roadway barriers will be placed on southbound Mount Pleasant Road at its intersection with Reservoir Road, on northbound South Main Street at its intersection with Mile Hill Road, on westbound Church Hill Road at its intersection with The Boulevard, on eastbound Sugar Street at its intersection with Elm Drive, and on northbound Queen Street at its intersection with Elizabeth Street.

Also, roadway barriers will be positioned on Main Street at five entering streets. Those roads are Academy Lane, Currituck Road, Hanover Road, School House Hill Road, and West Street.

Police said that the following road sections will have No Parking signs posted on them and will be considered tow-away zones during the parade: The Boulevard between Church Hill Road and School House Hill Road, School House Hill Road between The Boulevard and Main Street, Hanover Road between Main Street and Hall Lane, and Elm Drive between Sugar Street and Hawley Road. Also, parking will be prohibited along one side each of Meadow Road and Elizabeth Street.

Additional information concerning parking and passenger shuttles can be found at newtownctlabordayparade.org.

A sign posted earlier this week on Church Hill Road is reminding residents and others that a temporary road closure will be in place on Monday. Two events this weekend — the 13th Annual Newtown Road Race on Saturday, and the Labor Day Parade on Monday — will mean temporary closures in different areas of town. —Bee Photo, Hicks
