Newtown Bee photographer Bill Glass is frequently out and about holding a mirror up to the community with his camera, his talented eye always seeking out unique perspectives to showcase the beauty that is our home town. Sunday afternoon Bill was in the center of town as a snow squall passed through. He captured that weather event while looking at the historic building at 43 Main Street. “When I think of the center of town, I always think of the General Store,” he said this week. We're watching the snow come down again this morning. From the office windows at 5 Church Hill Road, we're also seeing plenty of plows and other vehicles working through today's precipitation. The National Weather Services shows on weather station in Sandy Hook reporting 1 new inch of snow as of 8 am. Bridgeport Airport and Weston are leading Fairfield County, with stations at each location both reporting 1.8 inches of snow as of 7 and 8:30 am, respectively. The weather service says snow, freezing rain, and sleet will continue until 3 pm, then a chance of snow. Chance of precipitation is 90%.High temperature will be near 29. Wind chill values will remain between 15-20. Northeast wind 8-11 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 1-2 inches possible, also according to the weather service. It will be cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 15. Wind chill values between 5-10, with northwest wind 8-11 mph.Newtown schools are closed today, as is C.H. Booth Library.
The Commission on Aging’s final meeting of 2023 was quick, included the reelection of its board, and concluded with a reminder for its members on upcoming meeting dates.
We all would like nothing to change, but look at how much this proposed property will add to the grand list. The eastern lot is currently assessed at $352,000 which brings in just under $10k in property value. I appreciate you taking note that the new houses will be $1,000,0000 EACH! This means the property, including club house, pickleball courts, skeet range, putting greens could be assessed at 117 million which would collectively bring in over $3,000,000 in tax revenue. This could also mean over 200 new luxury cars which brings in over $300k in additional revenue. Let's be honest though, they will register out of state. Either way, let's be honest here, if we had 3 MILLON more tax revenue the school wouldn't have to worry about canceling Spanish classes for kindergarteners.
Lets get it passed!
Leave the 'Rich" alone. 50% of this country pay no taxes. And many get money back. The taxpayers on the 'Gold' coast here in CT keep Hartford and Bridgeport afloat. Run them out of town and see what happens.
Yes, she did say that. Why would any bureaucrat publicly admit they made a mistake or recommended violating policy? Yet others, including board members, acknowledged naming the vendor for the routing services as All Star was "a mistake" and likely poisoned the well to other bidders (as was explicitly specifying the fuel type of the rolling stock.) While the members knew they did not get a competitive response to the RFP, they awarded the contract anyway... to the same vendor who got a no-bid contract in 2017. That means Newtown's ~$4.5M annual bus contract has not been put out to bid in 10 years, something to consider when asking why our PPE is so high.
They clearly didn't get the message ! CUT THE BUDGET by 20% , not raise it ! Newtown spends $2,500,000.00 every week now ! It will be $2.6m if you approve it ! Who are these people not paying attention to the cost of living? Throwing money at the school administration will not make your kids any smarter ! We are at $22K per kid per year, that is insane ! CUT THE BUDGET ! Go show up and VOTE, because 1200 people who voted yes will show up again, and it's the 1200 people who decide your cost of living for years to come. 51% voters turnout should be mandated to approve the budget, not pathetic 15% of voters. Stop these nonsensical referendums and send everyone a card in the mail so we have a true outcome what people actually want.
