State police have charged a social worker for prisoners at Garner Correctional Institution with two drug offenses in connection with an incident that occurred at the high-security prison on April 25.

State police said they charged John Renzulli, 65, of Southbury, with possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana and with illegal possession of marijuana within a correctional institution.

Renzulli is a correctional social worker who is employed by Correctional Managed Health Care of the University of Connecticut Health Center.

State police responded to the prison at about 10:30 am on April 25 after it was learned that Renzulli was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana while participating in an employee training session, officials said.

Renzulli has been placed on administrative leave with pay while an internal investigation into the matter is conducted by his employer, officials said.

Following arrest processing, state police released Renzulli on $5,000 nonsurety bail for a May 6 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.
