Update: NHS will visit top seed Joel Barlow of Redding in the Tuesday, May 21, semifinals at 4:15 pm.

Pitcher Dhilan Aminn had a dominant effort on the mound in leading the No. 7 Newtown High School baseball team to a 2-0 upset win at No. 2 New Fairfield in the South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals on May 18. Amin struck out 14 batters.

Amin also scored the first run of the game, coming across home plate on a safety squeeze bunt by Evan Nikolis. Danny Leyva drove in Newtown's other run.

Newtown finished the regular season strong with five straight wins.

"It feels amazing. I told the guys you're playing loose, you're playing relaxed," Newtown Coach Ian Thoesen said. "The team's playing great."

Amin said the playoff energy coupled with recent winning ways drove the Nighthawks in their postseason opener.

"We can tell we're a better team than we were at the beginning of the season," Amin said.

Newtown will play in the Tuesday, May 21, semifinals (it was announced Sunday that NHS will go to top seed Joel Barlow of Redding at 4:15 pm).
