Gretchen Furse of Newtown has enrolled in the full-time Jewelry Making and Repair program at North Bennet Street School in Boston.

Sean David Pond, a 1997 graduate of Newtown High School, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD, in May. He majored in communications and military science. Mr Pond, a United States Army ROTC scholarship cadet, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant during a formal ceremony on WMC’s campus.

Additionally, he played four years of varsity basketball and, as a senior, co-captained the team.

Mr Pond distinguished himself as an ROTC cadet with recognition for academic, athletic, and leadership ability, having received The Barry A. Winkelman Memorial Award; The Society of the War of 1812 Award, given to an outstanding student with high moral character; The Retired Officer’s Association Award; and The Gold Medal Athlete Award. Also during his ROTC Advanced Camp training at Fort Lewis, Wash., he received a Certificate of Achievement for achieving a maximum score of 300 on the Army Physical Fitness Test.

Lt Pond is currently attending the Army Transportation Corps Officer Basic Course at Fort Eustis in Newport News, Va. He will report to duty in January 2002 at Fort Shafter in Hawaii.
