Around The Horn — Fall Ball Results

Newtown team one 13, Newtown team two 4:  in the opening day game at the new field at Fairfield Hills, Mike Herring had the first hit, a long double to left center in a battle of 15U teams. Connor Blanc led the winner with three hits and 5 RBI's while Chris Tenney stroke a long triple. Austin Bonadio, Steven Braun, Ryan Truchsess and Theo Hartlett also added hits. Tenney, Drew Robinson, Theo Hartlett and Austin Bonadio combined for 11 strikeouts. Mike Herring gunned down a runner at home in the first inning with Connor Blanc applying a one handed tag. Kyle Wilcox and Anthony Maki had good days at the plate for team two.

Newtown 6 Hurricanes 19, Redding 7: Great pitching by Henry Primavera and Andrew Lee and lots of hitting by Colin Parker led to the win.  At bat, long doubles by Brian Kerins and Matt St. Jean left the Hurricanes solidly ahead after two innings. Clutch catching and smart base running by Peter Clifford, as well as solid contributions by Ben Reilly and Scott Alexander added to the score while Colin Patrick sealed the win with a dominant sixth inning on the mound. 

Red Rockets 29, Monroe 9: Dan Pearson, Carlo Fenaroli, Owen Samson and Matt Campbell combined for 14 hits and Connery Mayer and Michael Liberante pitched well.

Red Rockets 6, Newtown team one 6: Jake Oliger and Pete Debona, of the Red Rockets, held the cross-town  team to just one run over the last five innings to pull out a 6-6 tie in a contest that featured great plays and timely hitting. Matt Campbell doubled home two runs and Michael Liberante threw out basestealers as the Red Rockets came back from five down to tie the game.

Newtown Rebels 9, New Fairfield 5: Missing four key players, the Rebels refused to surrender and won a hard-fought game. The Rebels were led by John Hampford, who drove in three runs and pitched his way out of a tight jam in the fourth inning. Teammates Stefan Hennessey and Brandon Marks each threw two shutout innings. The Rebels jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead. They loaded the bases when Ben Stoller was hit by a pitch, Stefan Hennessey reached on a fielder’s choice and Hampford walked. Eric Pisani was also hit by a pitch, scoring Stoller. Hennessey got into an intentional pickle, leading off third base, and scored. Mike Burton ripped an RBI single to right field. Rebels shortstop Hennessey fielded two consecutive ground balls and threw to catcher Austin Raftery, who tagged two runners out at the plate. In the fifth inning, after New Fairfield climbed back into the game, the Rebels put the game on ice, scoring three runs to increase their lead to 9-4. Raftery and Greg Hennessey ripped singles to left field, and Stoller dropped down a sacrifice bunt. Marks smacked an RBI single to left field, and Hampford crushed a two-RBI double. Marks and Harry Snellback each stole two bases.

Sewer Rats 8, Rebels 5: Mike Daubert and Dean Lindquist smacked key singles in the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie for the Sewer Rats.Matt Spencer knocked in an insurance run in the seventh inning, scoring Austin Ekstrom, and teammate Stephen Walsh also scored on an error. Daubert and Ekstrom threw four shutout innings to keep the Rebels at bay until the Sewer Rats’ offense erupted. The Rats opened the scoring with three first-inning runs. Daubert walked, stole second and scored on a single by Bubba LeBlanc. Wyatt DePuy crushed a long double to right field, scoring LeBlanc. DePuy scored on an RBI groundout by Ekstrom.The Rebels bounced back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Gibney and Ben Stoller walked. John Hampford drove Gibney home with a single, and Austin Raftery knocked in Stoller with an RBI groundout. Ryan Pisani walked with the bases loaded to bring in Marks. In the second inning, the Rats took a 4-3 lead when Patrick Pierce knocked in a run. The teams traded leads in the middle innings. Eric Pisani pitched well in relief for the Rebels, his first pitching appearance on a 90-foot field. He retired seven of 10 batters. Rats center fielder Joe Davis made a great, over-the-head catch to rob Ryan Pisani of a hit in the final inning.

Orange Crush 8, Newtown (team six) 7: Brandon Hensel, Adam Bergeron, and Chad Azzarito kept the game close with four innings of solid pitching backed up by Chris Blanco’s RBI single and Grant Untiedt’s RBI double for the Crush. The winners scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Jonathon Paes started the pivotal rally with a leadoff walk. George Pagett, Michael Schlesinger and Jack Moulder followed with RBIs. Moulder pitched two scoreless innings.

Orange Crush 15, Monroe 6: Brandon Hensel, Parker Johnson, Chris Blanco, and Jonathon Paes provided strong performances on the mound while Sean Wallace was solid behind the plate as the Crush won their fifth straight. The Crush had production up and down the lineup with key hits from Thomas Gavel, Parker Johnson, Brandon Hensel, Michael Schlesinger, Jack Moulder and Chris Blanco.
