Newtown High School’s hockey team dropped its season-opener 4-2 to Staples of Westport at Milford Ice Pavilion on December 12, then defeated host Mount Everett of Sheffield, Mass., 8-1 on December 15.

Against Staples, Phil Makris netted both Nighthawk goals. Andrew Gardiner, John Radatovich, and Jetson Ku each had an assist.

Makris lit the lamp three times and added a pair of assists in the win over Mount Everett. David Brestovansky and Matthias Paltauf both scored twice, and Adam Gray also found the back of the net.

Paltauf had two assists, and Carter Ballard, Jeremy Larkin, Gray, and Brestovansky all had helpers. The Hawks led 1-0 after one period of play and 2-1 through two stanzas before breaking the game open in the third.
