Occupation: I’m a part-time educational assistant at Middle Gate School, working with a third grade class this year.

Family: My husband, Dan, and I have three fabulous kids. Claire is 11 and in the fifth grade at RIS. Jack is 8 and in the third grade at Middle Gate. Ryssa, 7, is also at Middle Gate, in the second grade.

Pets: Not right now. We had a little foundling dog we found in a cornfield in Indiana. Stinky died three years ago, so we’re a family about ready for a puppy.

How long have you lived in Newtown? We’ve been in Newtown for five years. We moved here from Carmel, N.Y. We were thinking about adding on to our house and looking at houses for ideas. We drove up to Newtown and loved it — so we moved.

What do you like to do in your free time? My degree is in art therapy, so I paint in acrylics, and I make sterling silver and gold-filled jewelry with gemstones. Most of it I give to friends and family. Making jewelry helps me put order to my chaos, even if nothing else gets done around the house. I do a lot of arts and crafts with my kids. I made my own salad plates this past weekend using decoupage, and I do needle felting. That uses a long, barbed needle that catches the fibers in raw sheep’s wool, and it then becomes a sculpting medium. I love to read, but lately I’ve been reading the Nutmeg winners of children’s literature with my kids. I like to keep up on what they’re reading.

Do you have a favorite children’s book? It’s hard to pick just one. I love the different styles and the different subjects. Right now we’re reading The Cupcake Queen by Heather Hepler, and my son and I recently read The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? My favorite trip with my kids was when we drove out to Illinois for my father’s remarriage this summer, and then drove back slowly through the southern states, visiting places like Kentucky, Graceland, the Grand Ole Opry, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Williamsburg, and Chincoteague. It was wonderful.

What is the best thing about Newtown? I’ve got to say the schools, but the sense of community that is here, as well. We love everything that happens on Main Street, from Halloween to the Holiday Festival.

Whom do you most admire? My family comes to mind. My grandparents, my parents, and especially my children all have incredible qualities that make me speechless.

Do you have a personal philosophy? Try to learn something new and try to help someone every day. I learn something new each day from my kids, from my students, and from the staff at Middle Gate. They are all so generous.

Do you have a guilty pleasure? I don’t really feel terribly guilty about it, but I love to travel. I can’t even say how many times we’ve been to Disney World.
