Sunday Celebrations Resume Jan. 16

BRIDGEPORT — The Discovery Museum will once again highlight the multicultural talents of Connecticut artists and performers during its Sunday Celebrations entitled “Celebrating Nature,” planned for Sunday, January 16, at 4450 Park Avenue.

The afternoon will begin at 2 pm with the mesmerizing rhythms of the Framework Percussion Ensemble. The trio performs a combination of traditional, ethnic and original compositions on a variety of drums and other percussion instruments.

The world of Asia takes center stage at 3 pm as Motoko creates picture stories with body movements and her ability with words. This “mime-story teller” weaves together Asian folk tales of nature and fantasy, clad in a traditional Japanese hamada jacket.

The Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra Woodwind Quintet will follow at 4 pm with a classical program that will evoke the sights and sounds of nature and demonstrate its endurance as an inspiration to creativity.

January 16 will also mark the opening of the museum’s newest art exhibit, “Forces of Nature: Earth, Air, Fire & Water.” A free reception from 4 to 6 pm will offer an opportunity to meet many of the 15 artists whose works are represented. From paintings inspired by the Kuwaiti oil field fires to a three-dimensional waterfall installation, the works reflect the artists’ enthusiasm for nature and concern over mankind’s impact on the environment.

Sunday Celebrations are free with regular museum admission, which is $7 for adults; $5.50 for ages 3-18, students with ID and senior citizens; and free for visitors under age 3.

The museum is the largest hands-on art and science museum between New York and Boston. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 5 pm on Sunday.

Use Exit 47 off the Merritt Parkway; signs are posted. For additional information, call 203/372-3521 or visit the museum’s Web site: www.discoverymuseum.org.
