Marvin Bamberg

Former USPS

Employee

Marvin Bamberg, 86, a resident of Ashlar of Newtown, died December 28. He is survived by his son Steven Bamberg, his daughter-in-law Nancy Bamberg, and two granddaughters, Maggie and Kate Bamberg, all of Newtown.

Mr Bamberg was born in Ostrog, Poland, on October 10, 1920. Within two years the family was forced to flee Poland because of Pogroms. They were not allowed to enter the United States because of certain quotas so they made their way to Cuba, where Mr Bamberg received his education through high school. It was also in Cuba where his mother, Ethel Sara Bamberg, died from cancer on March 1, 1945.

In 1949 Mr Bamberg and his father Gerald Bamberg were able to get Gerald’s sister, Hana, who lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., to sponsor their entry into the United States.

On June 8, 1952, Marvin married Rae Jarcho of Staten Island, N.Y., where they resided for about two years. In 1953 they gave birth to their only child, Steven. Soon after, the family moved to Brooklyn and Mr Bamberg found employment with the United States Postal Service. He retired from the USPS in 1982.

On June 30, 1976, Mr Bamberg lost his wife to cancer. He continued to live alone in Brooklyn until illness forced him to move in 1996 to Connecticut, where he could be closer to his family. He first moved in with his son, then to Nunnawauk Meadows, and finally into Ashlar.

Services were held at The Plaza Jewish Community Chapel at 630 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, on Friday, December 29, and the burial was at Wellwood Cemetery on Long Island.

Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Adath Israel New Building Fund, 111 Huntingtown Road, PO Box 623, Newtown CT 06470
