Through late December and early January it is not uncommon to see a lot of former Newtown High School athletes – with their collegiate teams on winter break hiatus – visiting their ol’ alma mater, visiting with friends and taking in a game or two.

Here is what those NHS alumni have been doing this winter …

Catherine Maher

The senior guard scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds as the Lady Bantams, in its home opener, posted a 59-45 win over Albertus Magnus College last month.

Maher followed up with a 16-point performance – managed entirely in the second half – as the Lady Bantams smashed Westfield State, 61-49. Fourteen of her points, coming with the aid of four three-pointers, fueled a pivotal 20-9 run that allowed the Lady Bantams to erase a three-point deficit.

Maher then scored 19 points and dished off five assists as Trinity won its third game in a row, 66-54, over Clark University and improved to 6-2.

For the year, Maher – a graduate of St. Margaret’s-McTernan in Waterbury (now known as Chase Collegiate) has averaged 29.5 minutes a game while shooting 29-of-70 from the floor (12-of-39 from three-point land).
