Icemen, Grapplers, And Cagers All Come Out On Top

Newtown High School’s hockey, boys’ basketball, and wrestling teams were all victorious on January 7. On the ice, Newtown High’s hockey team played its third consecutive one-goal game, and won its second straight, with a 4-3 edging of host Wethersfield-Rocky Hill-Middletown at Newington Arena. Newtown’s boys’ cagers extended their winning streak to four with a 66-57 win at Abbott Tech in Danbury. The wrestling team had its home opener against Masuk of Monroe and earned a 72-3 victory for its ninth win in ten matches to begin the year.

More Dramatics For Hockey Team

Coming off consecutive overtime contests, the Nighthawks seemed destined to again be headed into extra time, but Dom Cartelli netted the game-winner with just five seconds remaining in regulation in the 4-3 win over Wethersfield-Rocky Hill-Middletown. Newtown trailed 2-0 and 3-2 but battled back with Cartelli scoring twice in the third period to cap the comeback and his hat-trick effort. Cartelli scored the first of his three goals to tie the game at two goals apiece after teammate Scott McLean lit the lamp. Lucas O’Brien and Cartelli assisted McLean’s tally. All of Cartelli’s net-finders were unassisted. Kyle Murphy stopped 26 shots in goal for Newtown. The Nighthawks improved to 2-3.

Cagers On A Roll

On the basketball court, Newtown’s boys’ team kept its winning ways going as Will Dalton scored 23 points and Harry Depuy dropped in 16. Charlie Huegi logged seven assists, Dalton came up with six steals, and Depuy pulled down 12 rebounds. Up next for the 5-2 Hawks is a date with Brookfield, which began the year with five straight wins. Brookfield visits Newtown on Tuesday, January 13, for a 7 pm start.

Wrestlers Beat Masuk

The wrestling team topped Masuk 72-3 to improve to 9-1 this winter. Results are as follows:

106: Tom Leuci pinned Tore Gambino in 0:47.

113: Luca Crudo pinned Mike Fedorko in 1:12.

120: Jack Wellman lost a 4-1 decision to Sean Richard.

126: Ed Lovely pinned Anthony Joaquim in 0:48.

132: Matt Gonzalez defeated Connor Gravelle 16-1, technical fall.

138: James Leuci won an 11-3 major decision over Dylan Palin.

145 Alex Stavola won a 4-3 decision over Gavin Scully.

152: Joe Accousti pinned Billy Lobdell in 1:33.

160: Connor LeMay pinned Evan Patterson in 4:20.

170: Anthony Falbo pinned Clayton Hoskins in 1:02.

182: Logan Walsh pinned Jack Gaber in 0:39.

195: Andy Hubina pinned Rob Krajewski in 0:33.

220: Tom Long pinned Jordy Huebner in 2:27.

285: Stephen Grasso pinned Louis Anthony in 0:13.

Murphy stopped 26 shots in Newtown's 4-3 win over Wethersfield-Rocky Hill-Middletown on January 7. The team had fallen to Stamford in overtime and beaten the Eastern Connecticut Eagles in OT.
