Ervin L. Story, beloved husband of Sharon Ann Loughman Story, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2022, under the care of hospice at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Connecticut. Erv put up a courageous and valiant fight against pancreatic cancer for the past four years.

Erv was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on December 10, 1941, the son of the late Clyde and Flora (VanValkenburgh) Story. He resided in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, for most of his early years, spending a great deal of time with his lifetime friend John McCarthy. He graduated from Newtown High School in 1959. After graduation, Erv entered the Navy. He served three years in the Navy aboard the USS Oriskany aircraft carrier — a time he was very proud of. Erv moved to Woodbury in 1984. During his life, he had many jobs including working as a pasteurizer at Baskin Robbins and as a senior stationary engineer at Southbury Training School up until his retirement.

Erv was an avid sports fan. He loved watching UCONN Women’s Basketball and the Boston Red Sox. He also enjoyed spending time outside. He would often go for walks around the neighborhood — stopping to talk to neighbors and friends — and he took immense pride in his immaculately kept lawn and garden. He was especially proud of his tomato plants and beautiful sunflowers. After his retirement, Erv stayed active by walking, sky diving, water skiing, and running a 5K for Cancer Care. He truly valued spending time with his son, Kyle — his best friend. Erv enjoyed traveling, especially to the Caribbean, South Carolina, and a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Alaska.

Above all else, Erv valued family more than anything in his life. He was always there to lend a helping hand to neighbors, friends, and family. Erv is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sharon Ann Loughman Story. He is survived by his children, Kyle Story and his wife Melissa of Litchfield, Frecia Ammons and her husband Mike of South Carolina, and Christopher Story and his wife Christy of North Carolina. Erv, known as “Poppy,” is also survived by his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy: Addie Grace and Baby Story (due in February 2023), Julia Michele and Sawyer Ammons, and Keegan and Caelan Story. He also leaves behind his sisters, Beverly Dunifon of Oregon and Debi Taylor and her husband Christian of Oakville; his brother-in-law Patrick Loughman and his wife Patricia of Sandy Hook; nieces Jodi and Lauren; and nephew John.

His quick wit and easy-going personality made him loved by many who will miss him immensely. Please remember Erv for his ultimate love of his family, children, and grandchildren.

A Service of Death and Resurrection will be held on Saturday, January 21, at the Woodbury Methodist Church, 4 Church Street, Woodbury, Connecticut. Visitation will begin at 10 am and the service will begin at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the United Methodist Church, 4 Church Street, Woodbury CT 06798.
