On January 2, the Newtown Police Department received confirmation of a positive identification of human remains found in the woods near Edmond Road on October 13, 2023.

The deceased was identified as 73-year-old Janet Conner, formerly of Southbury. Conner’s last known residence was in Southbury but it was believed she had been transient at the time of her death.

Police stated there is “no reason to believe that there were any suspicious circumstances” regarding Conner’s death.

“We offer our sincere condolences to Mrs Connor’s family,” stated a release from the department. “Identifying remains involves a great deal of tenacity and scientific analysis and we thank the Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Squad and the Connecticut State Forensics Laboratory for their assistance.”

An unidentified individual contacted Newtown Emergency Communications Center mid-afternoon Tuesday, October 13, after finding the remains. The discovery prompted police to close Edmond Road just north of the entrance to Pizza Palace and Sunrise Plaza for approximately nine hours while an investigation began.
