Saturn Rollover

A 16-year-old Sandy Hook resident was issued infractions last week for failure to maintain a proper lane and violation of passenger restrictions for graduated licenses following the rollover of the vehicle he was operating.

Police report Eric William Gray was driving a 2001 Saturn L200 northbound on Old Green Road around 2:37 pm, Wednesday, January 13. While negotiating a curve in the road near 40 Old Green, the vehicle swerved into southbound travel lane, then collided with the curbing on the southbound travel shoulder.

The Saturn rolled over onto its left side and then onto its roof off the left side of the road.

Gray and a passenger in the car were both wearing seat belts. No injuries were reported on scene.

Sandy Hook firefighters and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the scene.

Failure To Maintain Proper Lane

Hunter Mitchell Dolyak was traveling northbound on New Lebbon Road, operating a 2015 Toyota Tacoma double-cab pickup truck, around 9:51 pm, Wednesday, January 13.

Near the intersection with Beagle Trail, the truck crossed the center line of the roadway and entered into the southbound lane. The vehicle continued traveling northbound, drifting off the southbound side of New Lebbon Road, at which time it went into a ditch and the driver side struck a grouping of small trees.

Dolyak told Newtown police he became distracted. He was wearing a seat belt. No injuries were reported on scene.

Dolyak was issued an infraction for failure to maintain a proper lane.

Three Charges

Newtown police were dispatched to a two-vehicle non-injury collision that occurred on Mt Pleasant Road near Splendid Place around 11:33 am, Friday, January 15.

Following an investigation, it was determined that a vehicle being operated by Rebekah Ross, 48, of New Milford, attempted to pass a commercial vehicle on the right as the commercial vehicle was turning right.

Ross was arrested and charged with improper passing, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and operating a motor vehicle with no insurance.

Ross was taken to Newtown Police Department, where she was processed and released. She was given a court date of January 26.

Sideswipe On Narrow Bridge

A 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited S operated by Amanda Ruth Hanna, 20, of Monroe was traveling westbound on Meadow Brook Road, near Huntingtown Road, at approximately 5:49 pm Friday, January 15.

At the same time, a 2007 Honda Accord EX operated by Edward Rescanski, 50, of Monroe, was traveling eastbound on Meadow Brook Road.

Both vehicles approached and then entered a very narrow portion of the roadway, which is a small bridge over a stream. The Jeep’s front bumper area on the driver side sideswiped the driver side mirror and surrounding area of the Honda.

Both drivers and a passenger in the Honda were all wearing seat belts. No injuries were reported.

Hanna was issued a verbal warning for failure to a maintain lane.

Unsafe Passing Of Postal Truck

A 1990 Grumman Allied LLV-A owned by the United States Postal Service and operated by Jomaris E. Colon, 35, of Waterbury, was stopped in the southbound travel lane in front of 58 Orchard Hill Road, having delivered mail to that location, around 2:06 pm, Saturday, January 16. A 2016 BMW X3 28i operated by Sumakshi Vali, 51, of Newtown, was traveling south on Orchard Hill Road.

The BMW passed the mail vehicle on the left. The passenger side mirror of the BMW stuck the driver side mirror of the mail truck in the process.

The BMW’s mirror cover was scratched while the mail truck’s mirror was broken.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. No injuries were reported.

Vali was issued a verbal warning for unsafe passing.

Honda Hits Utility Pole, Then Fence, On Wasserman Way

Newtown police report that around 6:30 am Monday, January 18, a 2014 Honda CRV being operated by Daniel Scott Krauss, 22, of Sandy Hook, and a 2016 Subaru XV, being operated by Gary Marquis, 60, of Southbury, were traveling westbound on Wasserman Way between Trades Lane and Mile Hill Road South when the Honda went off the northbound shoulder.

The Honda struck an Eversource utility pole, which snapped and dropped live electrical wires into the roadway and onto the Subaru.

Krauss was transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to the hospital. Marquis was trapped in the vehicle until an Eversource crew could get to the scene and disconnect power. Once that happened, Marquis was able to drive the Subaru — with minor roof and hood damage — from the scene.

The Honda sustained disabling front end damage and was towed.

Hook & Ladder and Sandy Hook firefighters also responded to the scene. Wasserman Way was closed for nearly eight hours, until the pole could be replaced and wires restrung.

As of January 19, the accident was still under investigation.

Evading Vehicle Sought

Newtown police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a vehicle that caused an accident in the Stop & Shop parking lot, 228 South Main Street, on Monday, January 18, around 12:30 pm.

Police received a complaint in which a vehicle collided with a red Hyundai Genesis in the parking lot. The vehicle then left the scene.

Police state due to paint transfer on the Hyundai that the evading vehicle is silver in color and might have damage to its left front area with red paint transfer.

Child’s Watch Found

Newtown Police are holding a child’s watch that was found on the campus of Fairfield Hills during the late morning of Tuesday, January 19.

The owner is asked to contact the police department, 203-426-5841, to claim the watch. Anyone with information about the watch is also asked to contact the police department.
