Middle School Team Beats Bethel Twice

The Newtown Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade boys’ basketball teams both defeated Bethel twice this past week. Highlights are as follows:

Grade 8

The boys defeated a sharp shooting Bethel team 56-54 on clutch free throw shooting from Matt Hoyt and Mike Davis.

The team was led in scoring by Mike Davis who had a season-high 19 points.

Tommy Gleason and Matt Hoyt scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Mike Davis Angel Santos, Nathan Kalra, and Logan Puleri had outstanding games on defense. Matt Mossbarger put in a workman-like effort in setting up the offense.

In the second game against Bethel, another close one, Newtown prevailed 42-41 on 2 clutch free throws from Tommy Gleason.

With less than 15 seconds to play and down by one point, Gleason stepped to the line and sank both free throws to complete the come-from-behind victory. Mike Davis continued to dominate inside and led the team with 15 points.

Matt Mossbarger scored 8 points. Matt Hoyt and Angel Santos played solid games on defense to limit Bethel’s sharp shooting attack. Nathan Kalra, Matt Lindell, and Drew Tarantino also played aggressive defense, diving for loose balls.

Grade 7

Newtown defeated Bethel 49-40 behind a dominating effort from Julian Dunn who led all scorers with 17 points. Troy Frangione followed with 9 points and Nick Roche added. The defensive charge was led by Bobby Archiere and Will Dalton.

In the second game, the boys downed Bethel 35-21. Julian Dunn led all scorers with 10 points. Troy Frangione, Nick Roche and Charlie Huegi had 4 points each. Bobby Archiere and Will Dalton provided solid defense and strong rebounding in the victory.
