Rotary Names Students Of The Month For January

Newtown Rotary honored the Students of the Month for January at a recent meeting to a packed house of Rotarians, teachers, and family of the students honored. Those being honored were Valentina Pena, grade 5; Nikita Srivastava, grade 7; Natalie Dunn, grade 8; and Melody Conte, high school, World Language Department.

The program was started more than 14 years ago and has proved to be very successful. Originally, it covered only the high school but was later expanded to the middle school and then to the Reed Intermediate School and St Rose School. It affords the opportunity to honor the many students who are doing an outstanding job of being good students and good citizens.

The criteria for this personal achievement award are community service, citizenship, resiliency, positive attitude, and self-directed learner. President Larry Gardner explained the background of the award to the many parents and guests in attendance.

Rotarian Dr Tony Salvatore, assistant principal of Reed School, is in charge of this program. He introduced the awardees from the Reed and middle school. Virginia Cambarery, a teacher in the World Language Department, introduced high school student Melody Conte. President Gardner congratulated the students and presented each with a framed certificate.

Newtown Rotary is now meeting at the Inn of Newtown every Monday night for a dinner meeting at 6:15. Anyone interested in learning more about Rotary is invited to attend.
