Hawk Grapplers Blank Bethel And Win Ridgefield Challenge

Newtown High School’s wrestling team went to Bethel and shut out the Wildcats 78-0 on January 25, then won the Gary Tiger Ridgefield Challenge in a dominant fashion on January 27.

This was the team’s fourth tournament championship of the season. The Nighthawks beat 14 teams, including tournament host Ridgefield by 84.5 points, and South-West Conference rival New Milford by 87.5 points. All 13 of Newtown’s varsity wrestlers placed on the podium, including nine that made it to the finals.

First-place finishers were Jake Maddox (150 pound weight class), Marc Maurath (157), Fisher Stites (165), Charlie Dunn (190), and Jon DaSilva (285). Finishing in second were Tommy Milligan (106), Kenna Gioffre (120), Shaun Daoust (132), and Antonio Arguello (144). Hawks to place fourth were Grayson Renkert (138), Andrew Corey (175), and Thomas Morgan (215). Brayden Ayles earned his varsity letter during the Ridgefield tourney.
