“Second Structure Fire In A Week, This Time On Hanover Road,” by Shannon Hicks and John Voket, published January 29. The second major structure fire in town within a week swept through a Hanover Road residence in the area of Silver City Road on January 29, drawing volunteers from all five local fire companies, as well as mutual aid from several neighboring towns, including Brookfield and Southbury. “Fast Moving Friday Morning Fire Destroys Aspen Lane Home; Fundraiser Launched,” by John Voket and Shannon Hicks, published January 22. A rapidly advancing fire that may have originated in or around a fireplace chimney appears to have destroyed a 3,000-square-foot home on Aspen Lane on January 22. “Newtown Piloting Two Vaccine Clinics As Officials Team Up For Latest Outreach Video,” by John Voket, published January 28. As state virus deaths surpassed 7,000, Newtown First Selectman Dan Rosenthal and Health District Director Donna Culbert met this week to record the latest in The Newtown Bee’s ongoing series of “COVID-19 Clips” — outreach videos posted to the newspaper’s YouTube channel to provide important information as the community continues to grapple with the novel coronavirus. “Surviving The Virus: Part 5 — COVID-19 Leads To Double Lung Transplant For Former Resident,” by John Voket, published January 25. This is the next in a series of features focusing on current or former Newtown residents who have contracted and/or suffered through the effects of COVID-19. Like so many of those who contracted COVID-19, transplanted Newtown native Carl “Chad” Werden was in good health and had never suffered any serious health threat — never mind spending months in hospital and surviving through a virus-related double lung transplant. “Newtown High Athletes Set To Bring Their Games To The Division I Level,” by Andy Hutchison, published January 23. Newtown High School sports may be on hold once again, but some of the school’s athletes have plans for continuing their careers at the collegiate level — including five who, this past fall, signed National Letters of Intent to play Division I sports.
