Another game, another close outcome – a fifth straight hard-fought win for the Newtown High School boys' basketball team.

The Nighthawks used a wild fourth-quarter outburst to go on a 27-15 run to overcome host New Milford for a 71-62 win on February 4. Newtown earned its fifth straight victory to improve to 9-5 overall and 7-1 in South-West Conference play. New Milford fell to 4-10 overall (1-8 in SWC action).

Ten of Newtown's 14 games have been decided by nine or fewer points, including a 58-56 nail-biter win over Joel Barlow of Redding in its previous tilt, another game in which a late rally made the difference. Newtown finished that contest with a 20-8 scoring run to eek out the victory. All things considered, the New Milford game was a lopsided affair for a Newtown team that has been involved in five games decided by four points or less.

The Hawks got a balanced scoring attack as four players finished in double figures. Mike Davis led the way with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Julian Dunn also recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Brian LeBlanc had 15 points, and Troy Frangione added 13 points and five assists.

Newtown Coach Tim Tallcouch points out that the triumph sets up a big matchup with another team that is 7-1 in conference play: Weston. The Hawks are scheduled to visit the Trojans, who boast a 10-3 overall mark, for a 7 pm clash on Friday, February 7.

Newtown is slated to return home on Tuesday, February 11 when Stratford comes to town for another 7 pm game.

Julian Dunn goes up for a shot during Newtown's win over Barlow on January 31. Dunn scored 22 points in the game and added 16 points and 11 rebounds in a February 4 victory at New Milford.
