MILFORD — The Sandy Ground Project was established by the New Jersey Fireman’s Benevolent Association last year. Its mission is to build 26 playgrounds along the coast of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut in towns hit by Hurricane Sandy. Each playground honors and provides a lasting memory of the 26 children and teachers who lost their lives on December 14, 2012.

Milford will be the location of one of those playgrounds. It will be built in memory of James Mattioli, a 6-year old who was among the children killed on 12/14.

His playground is scheduled to be built on March 15, with a ribbon cutting planned for March 22.

That same morning, a 5K run/walk and kids fun run/obstacle course will be help to help cover the costs of the Milford playground.

The certified 5k will start at Fowler Field, passing the playground site on New Haven Avenue, and then returning to Fowler Field.

Race fee is $26, with registration closing on March 18. Race day registration will open at 7:30 am, and the 5K will begin at 10.

Children are invited to participate in a quarter-mile fun run/obstacle course, which will begin at 9 am. Cost is $6 per child.

For those who want to help with the fundraising effort but cannot get to Milford on race day, a virtual 5K is also being offered. Fee for that option is also $26.

Registration is .available online

Corporate sponsorships are still available for the race, ranging from $250 to $2,000. For information send email to s.brown418@yahoo.com.
