Newtown Police Explorers, Cadet Post #823, is seeking young people interested in joining the organization in which they learn about law enforcement, according to a statement from the group.

The organization, which was formed in 2011, is looking for males and females ages 13 to 21 to volunteer their time to learn skills in the field of law enforcement.

Cadets would learn skills such as directing traffic, handcuffing techniques, and riot control, among others.

The cadets use such skills to participate in police Explorers competitions such as the SWAT Challenge and the Stations Day events. Cadets also attend mock police academies.

Prospective members should be dedicated persons who are interested in developing leadership skills, responsibility, and a sense of community service, according to the statement.

The group meets biweekly from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays at Town Hall South at 3 Main Street.

Youths interested in joining may contact police Patrol Officer Felicia Figol at felicia.figol@newtown-ct.gov or the Newtown Police Explorers at newtownpoliceexplorers@gmail.com.
