A Celebration Of Happiness

By Larissa Lytwyn

Eight Middle Gate students were recently selected to represent their school in the Connecticut PTA’s 2003–04 Reflections contest, “I’m Really Happy When…,” a nationwide K–12 arts recognition program honoring students in music, photography, literature, and visual arts.

Applicants are divided into four grade-based groups: primary, grades K–2; intermediate, grades 3–5; junior, grades 6–8; and senior, grades 9–12.

Schools choose one student to represent each grade level in each category; for example, high schools can have up to four nominees while K–4 Middle Gate can choose up to eight.

This year, first grader Brittany Watson and third grader Yossi Kohrman-Glaser were nominated in the music division. Yossi, an Awards of Excellence Winner, is a past first place state winner in music from 2002–03.

Kindergartner Jacob Harper and fourth grader Madison Hauck were recognized for their work in photography. Second grader Emily DeGirolamo and third grader Kristiana Engler were chosen for their accomplished writing pieces.

First grader Seth Barrett and fourth grader Hannah Barrett were selected to represent the visual arts category on the primary level.
