McCourt Continuing Distinguished Author Lecture Series
McCourt Continuing Distinguished Author Lecture Series
WASHINGTON GREEN â On Friday, February 13, at 7 pm, in The Meeting House on The Green in Washington, the internationally celebrated author Frank McCourt will present the next lecture of The Gunnery Schoolâs 2004 Distinguished Author Series.
The Gunnery invites interested members of the community to attend the lecture series, free of charge. Seating is very limited, however, and organizers expect the lecture to be well attended. Call Paula Krimsky at 860-868-7334 extension 251 for additional information or to reserve a seat at the lecture.
Mr McCourt plies a nearly forgotten art â that of the master storyteller. From his Pulitzer Prize-winning Angelaâs Ashes to its continuation with âTis, Mr McCourt, at his best, renders ordinary humans beset with extraordinary human problems.Â
In addition to a Pulitzer Prize, Mr McCourt has been the recipient of the prestigious National Book Criticsâ Circle Award, The ABBY Award, The LA Times Book Award, numerous honorary degrees, and saw Angelaâs Ashes selected as the #1 Non-Fiction Book of the Year by Time and Newsweek magazines.
Mr McCourt has also penned an acclaimed musical revue, The Irish and How They Got That Way, and a two man play, A Couple of Blaguards. He is currently working on his third book, a memoir about teaching, and co-composing a ritual Mass.
Mr McCourt will sign copies of his books for members of the audience.
The Gunnery has scheduled five events during the school year 2003-04 as part of a new annual series building on the Distinguished Author Lectures. The speakers have been chosen to enhance different aspects of the schoolâs curriculum.
Author/naturalist Jake Page gave the lecture on September 19, followed by Dr Joseph Marron on October 7, and a lecture for the art department on November 7.
ESPN baseball analyst Peter Gammons will continue the series with a program in April for the athletics department.
The Gunnery is at 99 Green Hill Road in Washington.
