A free movie night for sixth graders was held at Reed Intermediate School on February 10, and was organized by the Parent Teacher Association.

On the Friday before, the fifth graders had their night in the cafetorium, and viewed the animated film “The Bad Guys” made in 2022. For the sixth graders, the PTA selected a cult-classic— The Princess Bride. This 1987 film is a fairy tale parody about true love and honor renowned for its absurd humor and action sequences.

Movie nights at Reed are organized annually by the PTA. Sixth graders in attendance may have attended last year, but the class before them was interrupted by COVID and did not get to experience the night as a tradition.

“It’s a time for them to get together with friends,” PTA Vice President Jessica Kerney said. Kerney is glad that movie nights at Reed have been revived for a second year, describing movie night as “a reward for students, a free event, something to give back.”

Students in their pajamas set up blankets, and took time to chat and munch on snacks before the show was set to start — a show that had first premiered 24 years before they were born. Kathleen Shope, PTA president, was confident the film would be a memorable hit for the class.

“You never forget [The Princess Bride], between Andre the Giant, the six fingered man… it’s so fun,” Shope said.

Other PTA members in attendance expressed enthusiasm about the choice, voicing that they were excited to have an excuse to watch the film.

“This is my all-time favorite movie,” member Kerry Dorfman said, which was met with agreement from the chaperones beside her.

Dorfman’s sentiment was echoed to the word in Shope’s introduction of the film to the sixth graders, who settled in to enjoy a cozy (and classic) night at the movies.
