WATERBURY – About 60 people traveled to Teikyo Post University in Waterbury recently to learn a little bit about barn improvement at a Quiz The Experts, the popular program that addresses a variety of equestrian issues.

“We had some really helpful information from all the speakers,” reported organizer Carole Baker. “Beverly Ceuch gave us many tips on how to avoid problems with electricity, Carl Franz gave us sound advice on planning and designing barns and Mary Ann Johnson did a show and tell with equipment to fertilize, line and seed pastures.”

Dr Gaeta from Fairfield Equine also weighed in on each area and shared some advice on the entire process.

“We also had lively questions from the audience,” said Ms Baker, “which kept the panel on its toes. The whole evening was enjoyable and informative.”

The program detailed most of the do’s and don’ts of planning and building a barn (or just updating the old one). With a recent barn fire in Newtown, the issue was relevant for anyone looking to improve their barn.

There were details on layouts, materials, ventilation and fire prevention. Many barn fires have been caused by faulty wiring, so Ms Ceuch, a qualified electrician, was on hand to discuss that. Mr Franz, of Morton Buildings, spoke from the perspective of the contractor while Ms Johnson, of Danbury Agway, was there to dispense advice on stall fittings.

Finally, Dr Gaeta was there to reflect upon the steps used to plan and build Fairfield Equine, a new state-of-the-art veterinary clinic in Newtown.

The event was held at the Eagles Nest, Leever Student Center, on the campus of Teikyo Post in Waterbury. For further information on upcoming Quiz The Experts sessions, check The Newtown Bee or call Carole Baker at 1-203-596-4631 (e-mail at Cbaker@teikyopost.edu).
