Hebrew Reading Crash Course

SOUTHBURY — For those looking to improve their Hebrew reading skills, a free Hebrew reading crash course of the National Jewish Outreach is being offered through Beth El Synagogue. The course is intended for those who already have basic Hebrew reading skills and want to increase their fluency and comprehension.

Classes will run on five consecutive Tuesdays, March 6 through April 3, from 9:30 to 11:30 am each week. They will be held at the Walzer Family Jewish Community Campus, 444 Main Street North. Coffee and a nosh will be provided.

Students will strengthen their beginning Hebrew reading skills and achieve fluency. They will learn to read, as well as sing, prayers and psalms from the Friday night service and passages from Hebrew texts. By the end of the session, they will acquire a vocabulary of approximately 100 new words and also be able to recite and lead prayers with competence and confidence.

Participants will also learn how to recognize Hebrew prefixes, suffixes, and root words, and develop reading comprehension so that they can better understand what they are reading.

Each participant will receive a Level II student text. Materials are provided free of charge by the National Jewish Outreach Program. The only expectations are that students commit to practicing a little at home each day and come to class with a willingness to learn.

Cantor Sharon Citrin of Beth El Synagogue will lead the class. Registration is required and class size is limited to ten participants. Those wishing to take part may register by calling Beth El Synagogue at 203-264-4500 by noon on Friday, March 2.

If you have questions about your Hebrew reading proficiency or are seeking additional information about the class, call Cantor Citrin at 203-841-6192.
