Girls' Basketball Team Wins State Playoff Opener

Newtown High School's girls' basketball team defeated visiting Norwich Free Academy (NFA) 36-19 in the second round of the Class LL State Tournament on March 3. The No. 3 Nighthawks had a first-round bye and held No. 19 NFA to just two points in the second quarter on the way to building a 27-10 halftime lead.

Izzy Caron singlehandedly outscored NFA, pouring in 24 points to lead the Nighthawks. Allie Bradley scored nine points in the win. Bradley had a dozen rebounds, Bella Gerace and Ava Rochester each had six rebounds, and Macey Cuomo had five boards.

With the victory, the Nighthawks will host a quarterfinal-round game on Wednesday, March 8. Newtown will take on the winner of No. 6 Sacred Heart Academy and No. 11 Fairfield Warde, tentatively set for 7 pm.
